Kindig-It Design, Inc v. Creative Controls, Inc., Case No. 2:14-cv-00867-JNP-BCW

kindig-it design lawsuit

It is unclear, however, why this distinction should make any difference for purposes of personal jurisdiction. Nothing requires that the “purposeful availment of the forum” be for commercial purposes. Indeed, that “purposeful availment” is often for personal, recreational, or other non-commercial purposes. Rule 16(b) of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure requires either a district judge or a magistrate judge to issue a scheduling order that limits the time to complete discovery. "[A] 'Scheduling Order is not a frivolous piece of paper, idly entered, which can be cavalierly disregarded by counsel without peril.'" Washington v. Arapahoe Cty. Servs., 197 F.R.D. 439, 441 (D. Colo. 2000) (citation omitted).

Kindig It Lawsuit: A Closer Look at the Legal Battle

Creative Controls' first alleged contact with Utah is the website it maintains. This website advertises Creative Controls' products and, at one time, allowed customers to place orders and make purchases. But there has been no evidence presented that the website specifically targets Utah customers. In fact, Creative Controls' president swears that it “does not systematically or otherwise target persons or firms as potential customers in the state of Utah for the sale of any products.” Kindig offers no evidence to contradict this testimony. This document is filed in the new Appellate Case Management System (ACMS), which does not have direct document access.

Q: What lessons can other custom car builders learn from this lawsuit?

See Gorman v. Ameritrade Holding Corp. , 293 F.3d 506, 510–11 (D.C.Cir.2002) (explaining that “our traditional notions of personal jurisdiction” are adaptable to the internet context). Although a company may have a public telephone number that can be dialed from every state, it is not necessarily subject to personal jurisdiction in every state. Rather, personal jurisdiction rising from telephonic contacts can only be based on actual phone calls. Similarly, personal jurisdiction arising from an interactive website should only be based on actual use of the site by forum residents. The patent-related claims in this case are claims 1, 2, 7, 12, 13 and 14. Claims 1, 2, 12, 13 and 14 are claims for patent infringement or inducement of infringement.

The patent claims and the claim for business disparagement are factually unrelated to the Copyright-Related Claims. Indeed, Kindig has not even suggested that Creative Controls' copying of the photographs relates in any way to the patent claims or the claim for business disparagement. Accordingly, the court finds that there is no pendent personal jurisdiction in this case. Even were that doctrine to potentially apply, the court would exercise its discretion and not retain the claims because they factually unrelated to the claims over which the court has specific personal jurisdiction.

Creative Controls has not, at this stage, presented the court with sufficient argument to allow the court to conclude that any of the copyrights are invalid. If, however, through the discovery process, Creative Controls concludes that specific copyrights are invalid, it may bring a motion for summary judgment. Creative Controls argues that Kindig's Complaint does not adequately identify the copyrighted materials owned by Kindig. C. The court cannot exercise pendent personal jurisdiction over Creative Controls for the claims over which no specific personal jurisdiction exists. This court may exercise specific personal jurisdiction over Creative Controls for all claims arising out of that contact so long as doing so does not offend traditional notions of fair play and substantial justice.

Kindig-It Design, Inc. v. Creative Controls, Inc.

This is an “untenable result” that exposes the primary flaw in the Zippo test. The lack of any specific instances of Creative Controls' physical or digital contacts with Utah demonstrates why the Zippo sliding scale should not replace traditional personal jurisdiction analysis. The Zippo test effectively removes geographical limitations on personal jurisdiction over entities that have interactive websites. And because the number of entities that have interactive websites continues to grow exponentially, application of the Zippo framework would essentially eliminate the traditional geographic limitations on personal jurisdiction.

In any legal dispute, there are multiple sides to the story. The client filing the lawsuit alleged that Kindig-It Design failed to deliver the promised modifications, leading to disappointment and financial loss. On the other hand, Kindig-It Design contended that they had followed the agreed-upon specifications and completed the project to the best of their abilities.

Accordingly, the court must determine which, if any, of Kindig's claims arise out of Creative Controls' contact with the Utah forum. Accordingly, and for the same reasons as those articulated in the previous section, the court again finds Zippo to be unpersuasive. The court believes this conclusion is justified under Tenth Circuit law. Here again, the traditional test of minimum contacts and purposeful availment controls.

Firstly, the court stated that Kindig-It had adequately proved that Creative Controls had really communicated with clients in Utah. However, despite this, the court said the Kindig team could not prove that Creative Controls had violated any of their goods. Therefore, the court remarked that there was no case for copyright issues. As per Creative Controls, they delivered the product to their Utah client after receiving an order request on their website.

Co. v. Worthington , 344 P.3d 156, 159 (Utah App.2015) (explaining that an element of a fraud claim is that the complaining party relied upon the fraudulent misrepresentation). Because Kindig has failed to allege that it acted in reliance on the allegedly fraudulent photographs contained on Creative Controls' website, Kindig has failed to adequately state a claim for fraud. Creative Controls' final argument is that Kindig's claims must be dismissed under Rule 12(b)(6) for failure to state claims upon which relief can be granted.

However, a court will not accept as true “legal conclusions” or “[t]hreadbare recitals of the elements of a cause of action, supported by mere conclusory statements.” Ashcroft v. Iqbal , 556 U.S. 662, 678, 129 S.Ct. Thus, a claim must be dismissed where the complaint does not contain sufficient facts to make the claim “plausible on its face.” See Bell Atl. “A claim has facial plausibility when the plaintiff pleads factual content that allows the court to draw the reasonable inference that the defendant is liable for the misconduct alleged.” Iqbal , 556 U.S. at 678, 129 S.Ct. 1937 (citing Twombly , 550 U.S. at 556, 127 S.Ct. 1955 )). As explained above, however, the court dismisses the patent-related claims but finds that there is specific personal jurisdiction over Creative Controls for the Copyright-Related Claims.

The court agrees that, taking this allegation as true, Creative Controls' actions constitute a purposeful availment of the Utah forum. Creative Controls allegedly copied photographs from a Utah company's website and used the copied materials to creative derivative works. Given that contact, it is both foreseeable and reasonable that Creative Controls would be haled into a Utah court. Silent Drive, Inc. v. Strong Indus., Inc. , 326 F.3d 1194, 1201 (Fed.Cir.2003) (discussing when Federal Circuit law or regional circuit law applies to personal jurisdiction analysis). (quoting Goodyear Dunlop Tires Operations, S.A. v. Brown , 564 U.S. 915, 131 S.Ct. 2846, 180 L.Ed.2d 796 (2011) ).

However, the experience also presented opportunities for growth and introspection. Given the popularity of Kindig-It Design and the intrigue of a lawsuit, media outlets quickly picked up on the story. The case garnered significant attention, with news articles, online forums, and social media discussions analyzing and speculating about the details. The public, too, formed their opinions, often based on incomplete information and personal biases. Kindig-It Design is a renowned automotive customization shop founded by Dave Kindig. How to Build A Drone DIY Step by Step Guide 2023

Signal Quality – This one really comes down to who you’ll be flying with, you’ll notice that some VTXs offer the same power and channel options yet cost up to four times as much! The reason for this is that the cheaper VTXs spit out noise over a much wider range than the selected channel which can lead to interference in other pilots video feeds. The F7 chip is slowly coming in however we are not really making use of it yet. The older F1 chips present in the CC3D and NAZE 32 boards are now outdated and will not be supported by future software updates. Recent years have witnessed groundbreaking innovations in drone design. The emergence of foldable and portable drone designs has revolutionized the industry, offering unparalleled convenience without compromising performance.

Point Of No Return – Do You Really Want to Build a Custom RC Drone?

All in One or Separate – Many modern flight controllers are incorporating the PDB into the flight controller itself! This is great for tighter builds as you only need one board in the stack and wiring is simplified. The only negatives are that they are normally more densely populated giving you less room to solder wires and often require connections on both sides. The Betaflight F3 is a great example of an all in one flight controller. The flight controller is the brain of your drone taking into account the angle of your drone and your control input it calculates how fast the motors should spin and sends the signals to the ESCs.

Test 2 – Receiver Channels We need to make sure that our flight controller is talking to our receiver correctly, to this you will need to plug in a battery. With the drone powered you should be able to view any stick inputs on a receiver tab whilst checking that your switches match your intended flight modes. If this is not working correctly it may be linked to settings on your remote. Here’s a image showing my flight controller fully mounted. Note how the USB is on the side and all of the necessary wires are routed underneath the board where possible.

Test data such as thrust, torque, RPM, power, efficiency and more is collected using one of our propulsion test stands, and for this drone the RCbenchmark Series 1585 would likely be the best fit. Today’s commercial drones only come in a small range of options, typically with an even number of rotors and upward-facing propellers. But there are many emerging use cases for other kinds of drones. For example, having an odd number of rotors might create a clearer view for a drone’s camera, or allow the drone to carry objects with unusual shapes.

Step 5: Connecting the ESCs to the Motors

All multi-rotor RC aircrafts use propellers (not to be confused with helicopter blades) to achieve lift. Similar to drone frames, propellers can be made from a wide variety of materials, as well as exist in many different sizes. Last but certainly not least on this list is the octocopter. With this frame setup, there are eight arms, each of which are connected to a single motor. As you can imagine, there's a huge amount of thrust being produced with this type of setup.

Test 5 – Failsafe We want to now check that the drone will cut out if we lose radio signal. If you don’t have this correctly set up you risk either a fly away or the drone causing some damage if the remote is not powered up.

MIT Emerging Talent opens pathways for underserved global learners

Also known as a “Battery Elimination Circuit”, a BEC is designed to convert battery DC voltage to the required DC voltage of the flight controller you're using. One potential downside to this type of motor is that the brushes can wear out rather quickly, so their lifespans tend to be less than that of a brushless motor. Obviously, there are exceptions, but this tends to be the general rule. Personally, I've built a few smaller drones using brushed DC motors, and each time, I've almost always experienced problems after relatively short period of time. When I first started learning how to build a drone, one thing that I kept hearing about over and over again were “brushed” and “brushless” motors. At the time, I had no idea what they meant, nor did I know how each motor was different from the other.

What type of Drone Should I build?

Additionally, power systems and propulsion mechanisms—ranging from traditional rotors to innovative propulsion technologies—profoundly influence a drone’s endurance, speed, and maneuverability. A new system from MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) is the first to allow users to design, simulate and build their own custom drone. Every element of a drone, from its frame to motors, sensors, and batteries, contributes uniquely to its functionality. The frame’s design dictates structural integrity and durability, while powerful motors and well-designed propellers provide the necessary lift and precise control.

Imaging remains among the most popular applications for drone use, particularly among recreational, industrial, and research drones. Newer, larger digital sensors capture greater amounts of light at higher resolutions. This not only allows for higher-quality photos, but also provides greater room for software stabilization while still producing acceptably high-resolution output. But, Laliberte says, the biggest advancements here are actually in motor controllers, with drone makers adding advanced features like handling failed components.

When it comes to batteries you can never have enough and I would recommend a minimum of four for a beginner. I would highly recommend an OSD however they can also be run separately to the flight controller or onboard the PDB itself. These results suggest that either our battery is too heavy or our motor/ propeller combination was not producing sufficient thrust. The world of drone design is diverse and adaptable, catering to specific applications. For drones utilized in photography and videography, the emphasis is placed on stability, camera stabilization, and precise maneuverability to capture stunning aerial imagery.

All you have to do is supply the ESC with a DC input voltage, and it will automatically generate three out of phase voltages that connect to the motor, causing it to spin. Let’s now imagine that we placed the pitch of our 8045 prop onto a screw, so the screw now has 4.5 in pitch. One rotation of the screw would cause it to dig into wood by 4.5 inches.

Let’s say your estimate of weight for a drone you wanted to build was 1,000 grams. If you had a target TW of 2, this means you would need thrust of 2,000 grams. For a quadcopter, this would mean thrust of 500 grams on each motor.

Estimating thrust of a motor is a function of battery voltage, prop size and motor choice. Change one of these variables and you change how much thrust you will generate. All flight controllers are controlled by the firmware. Depending on the flight controller, you may have access to flash new firmware to the board.

Laliberte said this is especially true for bigger motors for larger (25 kg and above) electric drones, thanks to growth in the EV and electric aviation fields. Jeremy Laliberte has also seen an increase in overall motor quality. But not all ag applications require hoppers or sprayers.

Until recently, aerial photography (and videography) was a costly proposition requiring helicopters, airplanes, or build-it-yourself rigs. Thanks to relatively inexpensive drones this is no longer true. It's not surprising that so many people have discovered drones and the unique perspectives they can provide. For our candidates, data from the database tells us that all three propellers reach our hover thrust of 3.1 N, but only the 6040R King Kong nears the maximum thrust of 6.2 N (0.63 kgf) (figure 3).

Sylvester Stallone Spends $18 Million On Hidden Hills Home

The property also includes an 8-car garage and an art studio — Sly himself is a painter, and has a number of his own works hung up in his home in addition to pieces by other famous artists (including one painting by Kerry James Marshall). Located in North Beverly Park, one of L.A.'s most exclusive and star-studded neighborhoods, the Mediterranean-style home is set apart by its extensive city and canyon views, says Mills. "A lot of these homes in Beverly Park are big, beautiful homes but don't have a view," she explains.

Entertainment

As for Stallone, he and wife Jennifer have traded California for Florida, where they recently acquired a $35 million Palm Beach mansion. According to Robb Report, the Rocky actor, 77, and his wife Jennifer Flavin, 55, have officially sold their Martyn Lawrence Bullard-designed mansion in Hidden Hills, Calif. for $17.2 million. Stallone originally asked for $22.5 million when he first listed it in December, the outlet states.

His humble origin story with CinemaBlend began all the way back in the pre-streaming era, circa 2009, as a freelancing DVD reviewer and TV recapper. Nick leapfrogged over to the small screen to cover more and more television news and interviews, eventually taking over the section for the current era and covering topics like Yellowstone, The Walking Dead and horror. Born in Louisiana and currently living in Texas — Who Dat Nation over America’s Team all day, all night — Nick spent several years in the hospitality industry, and also worked as a 911 operator. If you ever happened to hear his music or read his comics/short stories, you have his sympathy. When it comes to the best sports movies and the characters that drive their stories, it’s hard to think of a more inspirational quasi-hero than Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky Balboa. Thankfully, the Oscar-nominated actor and screenwriter shares some Rocky franchise lore in his first big sit-down interview opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger for Fox.

The star and the cinematographer largely choreographed the scenes. In 2004, that project, a short film called “Clear Cut,” debuted at the Made in Miami festival. In his Herald interview, he described how he had managed to spend only $2,000 on the movie by securing free locations, getting discounted sound equipment from a local high school and using a yacht owned by one of the bar’s regulars. Crew members and vendors, including sheriff’s deputies who provided security, struggled for months to be paid what they said they were owed. Several vendors reported the payment issues to journalists and the Mississippi Film Office, part of a state agency that approved a $2.8-million cash rebate to the producers, state documents show. He has thrived for years by paying aging A-list stars — Bruce Willis, Stallone, Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Mel Gibson — millions of dollars to be the face of his movies, often in exchange for just a day or two of work.

"I pick up the phone one day, and this voice says, 'Jade, this is Jennifer Stallone,'" Mills tells PEOPLE exclusively. "I was absolutely thrilled to hear from her," she says, adding she's long admired the mother-of-three and Serious Skincare founder. "She's a very, very successful woman with her skincare products. She's also an interior designer. So I was just really in awe of her. Both of them are really larger-than-life people." The actor purchased the neo-classical villa which overlooked the Biscayne Bay in June 1993 for $8 million and lived there with his wife and their first daughter Sophia Rose.

At the time, a source told PEOPLE the two had "been unhappy for quite some time," adding that the couple "had lots of issues for years and she just had enough." In 2022, the actor and former model nearly called it quits on their marriage when Flavin filed for divorce citing “the dissolution of marriage and other relief” from Stallone in August. The Stallones' jaw-dropping infinity pool and spa, which look out over the stunning view. Among the home's most notable features is, perhaps unsurprisingly, the gym. The 8-bedroom, 9-bathroom and 3-half-bathroom home was first built in 1994 by architect Edward Granzbach, and covers 21,000 sq.

Sylvester Stallone Is a Florida Man, Complete With a Massive $35M Florida Mansion

There are two glass-walled gyms, one for aerobics and one for weights. Stallone has had a slew of famous lovers including supermodel Janice Dickinson, whom he was engaged to in the early 90’s but broke up with upon discovering that he wasn’t the biological father of their daughter. According to industry sources, the actor is worth a whopping $400 million as of 2019.

So it should be no surprise the 77-year-old lives in a property literally on the beach. Sylvester Stallone sold his Beverly Hills mansion to Adele for $58 million before moving to Florida. Before Adele snagged the property at the hugely discounted rate, the home was last listed for $80 million in October. Adele, 33, is getting a massive deal on the property but the purchase comes shortly after Adele bought three other properties in the Golden State in the last five years worth an estimated $30 million. Less than two years after Sylvester Stallone bought a 2.2-acre ranch in L.A.’s San Fernando Valley, the property has changed hands again. Records reveal the speedy new owner is music legend John Fogerty, originally of Creedence Clearwater Revival fame.

And Adele apparently bought it for a steal after Stallone originally listed the estate in January 2021 for $110 million. Amenities include a screening room, gym, cigar room, custom bar, art studio, putting green with sprawling lawns and infinity pools, according to the listing. Her soon-to-be new Beverly Hills abode has been owned by Stallone, 75, since 1994. He purchased the land for $2.35 million at the time and built the estate from the ground up, property records show. PEOPLE spoke to the real estate agent at the time, Jade Mills, who revealed it was Flavin who reached out for help with the impressive listing. Upstairs, the expansive master bedroom has a sparkling water view, while the wood-clad cathedral ceilings add grandeur to the interior.

Sylvester Stallone and wife Jennifer Flavin may be walking a lot of red carpets soon, thanks to Stallone’s Golden Globe-nominated role in the movie “Creed” — but they still want to walk away from their luxury desert retreat. Built in 2015 but updated since, the two-story home opens through a gated driveway, landscaped walkway and ivy-covered entry. Inside, sky-lit spaces combine crisp white walls and dark wood accents.

The ranch-style home sits on 2 acres of land and is surrounded by lush greenery, according to the Los Angeles Times. Sylvester Stallone is letting go of yet another sprawling piece of California real estate. Natalia Senanayake is an Editorial Assistant, Lifestyle at PEOPLE. She covers all things travel and home, from celebrities' luxury mansions to breaking travel news. The spacious living room features expanses of floor-to-ceiling windows and glossy wood cladding on the ceiling. At the same time, paintings add an artistic touch to the formal dining room that easily seats fourteen.

Dylan claimed the crew member would not have been within 100 feet of the “safe and controlled” maneuver. Chamberlain, the cameraman, also said he was not warned about any danger before or after going into the foul-smelling river. But eight people who were on set insist that Routt never directed a single scene. Routt told the WLOX reporter that “Armored” would be released in about a year and “with me as director, it’ll do great,” he said, laughing. “Armored LLC” also landed a coveted waiver by the performers union SAG-AFTRA to shoot during the actors’ and writers’ strikes. Yet when Hollywood trade site Deadline touted the launch of Convergence last year, there was no mention of Emmett’s involvement.

While some performers in Hollywood have stage names, it’s exceedingly rare for a director to use an alternate identity in film credits and production documents. The Directors Guild of America has rules governing directors’ creative rights and responsibilities, but Emmett isn’t subject to them because he’s not a DGA member. “Armored” and Emmett’s “Cash Out” films were not DGA-covered productions, the union said. A $58 million tear-down might seem over-the-top but in tinseltown, anything is possible. TMZ recently reported that Adele is gutting the entire home for a full renovation, even removing the entire second story. The neighborhood’s past and current residents include Denzel Washington, Justin and Hailey Bieber, and Mark Wahlberg, to name a few.

The main house and guesthouse combine for nearly 10,500 square feet, with four bedrooms, eight bathrooms and amenities such as a gym and movie theater. A vine-strewn loggia leads to the backyard, where winding steps descend to a private backyard with a swimming pool, spa and cabana. Adele has since made some renovations — and the previous owner approves.

Features include a two-story foyer, a motor court, a family room, office and formal living and dining room. It also comes with a two-story, two-bedroom guest house with a fully-equipped kitchen. His Beverly Park mansion covers 21,000 square feet with eight bedrooms and 12 bathrooms on what Hilton considers the best view lot in the 61-home neighborhood. The lavish compound also features a two-story guesthouse designed by Richard Landry, who has worked with stars like Gisele Bundchen and Tom Brady on their former L.A. It includes 2 en-suite bedrooms, a living room, kitchen and dining area. The sprawling property, which was previously listed with Hilton & Hyland for $110 million, is situated on 3.5 acres of land, and boasts magnificent views of the surrounding hills set against the glittering backdrop of Los Angeles.

The atrium next door has the atmosphere of a castle keep or maybe a giant's den, with a stained-glass skylight and a frescoed gallery. On the chunky stone walls are canvases by Bouguereau and Francis Bacon. The couple curl up here on their overscale velvet-covered sofas to watch television, which is housed in a massive baroque mantelpiece from an Italian palace.

Situated on 3.5 acres of land, the Italian Riviera-style residence is situated in the exclusive guard-gated enclave of North Beverly Park. Adele is reportedly shelling out $58 million for Sylvester Stallone’s custom-built Beverly Hills home, and though that’s an eye-popping price, the “Rocky” star listed it last January for a whopping $110 million. In addition to their fancy new Hidden Hills spread, Fogerty and his longtime wife Julie still own an even larger estate out in the Hidden Valley community near Thousand Oaks. That 20-acre compound was up for grabs at $20 million earlier this year, though it’s since been removed from the market.

Speaking to the Wall Street Journal in June, Stallone said that Adele only agreed to buy the property if she could also keep Stallone's life-size statue of Rocky Balboa. Stallone bought the property for $4.5 million in January 2010, then listed it in 2015 for $4.1 million. Public records show that Stallone had accepted an offer in April 2016, then began taking backup offers, but the sale fell through and he took the property off the market in September 2016. The family were even given the go-ahead to build a security gate around the property, transforming it into a luxury compound right in the middle of an upscale Palm Beach neighborhood. Looking for a change of scenery, Stallone purchased this Caribbean style casa in Palm Beach, Florida for a whopping $35.38 million in December 2020.

He listed it in the later 90s for $27.5 million, only to let it go in 1999 for $16.2 million. It also includes a two-story living room as well as a formal dining room, a chef’s kitchen with a beautiful, granite-topped island, a wine room as well as an outdoor kitchen. North Beverly Park is considered the “most prestigious” section in the Los Angeles area for high-end residential real estate. The “paparazzi-proof” neighborhood features two guarded checkpoints and is home to heavy hitters such as Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg, Barry Bonds, Eddie Murphy and a slew of billionaire businessmen. The Stallones’ Carribean-style estate in Palm Beach encompasses 1½-acres with otudoor loggias, a swimming pool, a whirlpool spa and a sandy beach, all facing 254 feet of frontage on the Intracoastal Waterway. The wire transfers they received came not from “Armored,” but from a subsequent Convergence production called “Alarum,” a $19-million spy thriller starring Stallone and Scott Eastwood, that wrapped last month in Ohio.

Stallone is best known for creating the Rocky franchise, which kicked off with a film co-written by and starring himself in 1976. There have been five additional Rocky spin-off movies between 1979 and 2006. He also reprised the role of Rocky Balboa in 2018’s Creed II, which he co-wrote as well.

Los Angeles Theater Plays in LA

While it recently concluded its remarkable run on Broadway after 35 years, the play continues to enthrall audiences worldwide. Notably, this production will feature an all-black cast, marking a significant milestone in its African debut. Ross, according to Rankin, tried to write to Isherwood numerous times after he published his novella Sally Bowles (which was later republished in the novel Goodbye to Berlin and his Berlin Stories anthology). It only feels right that a decade later, she's making her return to Broadway in the same show—but a very different production, and trading the role of Fräulen Kost for Sally Bowles. "Cabaret's become as a marker in my life about my own growth, as a woman, and as a performer. To see your life marked by a piece of art is really rare. I'm not really sure how this could get more meaningful to me."

The Wallis is one of the newer performing arts centers on the scene, but it has proven it deserves a place on this list. From its production of Spring Awakening, which moved on to Broadway, or Debbie Allen's Freeze Frame, the Wallis has presented some top-notch productions that create quite a bit of buzz. From dance to theater to music, the shows take place in the 70,000-square-foot Wallis or the more intimate Lovelace Studio or Bram Goldsmith theaters.

Founders Stanley E. Williams and Quentin Easter opened the theatre as a way to create opportunities for Black creatives and performers. Despite great achievements, San Francisco’s longest-running Black theatre company experienced its share of hardships. Over two decades after opening, the theatre battled economic declines and the disappearance of ethnic-specific spaces in the region. The founders successfully combated those trends by collaborating with other companies and attracting iconic Black artists to share their work with the theatre. In the heart of Cleveland, Ohio, neighborhood settlement Karamu House has stood since 1915 as a symbol of community and artistic innovation. Founded as the Neighborhood Association, but most commonly known as the Playhouse Settlement, the space was created by two white social workers, Rowen and Russell Jelliffe, who sought out to produce plays with interracial casts for the community.

The Lincoln Theatre would feature performances from the best Black performers for over 30 years, notably Lionel Hampton, Duke Ellington, the Nat King Cole Trio, and Billie Holiday. The theatre was acquired by Bishop Samuel Crouch in 1961 with goals of expanding his congregation with a new place to worship. Renamed Crouch Temple, it operated until the 1970s when the building was converted into a mosque for the Black Muslim community. Karamu house remains a community-based non-profit arts and education institution and has continued to keep history alive with its commitment to preserve Black culture. Through the leadership of Benno Frank and Reuben Silver, Karamu eventually grew to house one of the best amateur groups in the country in the 1950s.

The stage named for and by LA's top downtown arts philanthropists might seem a bit out of place, miles away from their Grand Avenue Corridor, but the Broad Stage is an elegant venue for theater, dance and music performances throughout the year. Hand-painted floors were the jumping-off point for designer Amy Peltier’s soothing primary bedroom design. “It was so much work, but it turned out beautiful.” The firm wanted the space to feel “light and airy and breezy,” and incorporated fabrics and wall coverings by Thibaut in a soft color palette.

“Our whole goal with this space was basically to turn the lights on in the room, bring in the garden that’s outside, and kind of have an experience of a breath of fresh air,” Brosio says. Cozy Stylish Chic Creative Director Jeanne K. Chung and designers Angela Lee and Caroline Meloche brightened the dark wood-paneled library to create a space where residents can unplug. “Our two main goals were to create a space that was comfortable and a little bit updated while also retaining that history and not touching or harming all the really cool features that were innate to the room and came with the house,” Meloche says. Wallpaper was added to the ceiling and the backs of the bookcases, and heavy wood blinds were replaced with soft draperies and Roman shades to make the space feel lighter. The firm used a mix of fabrics and wall coverings by Ralph Lauren Home from Designers Guild throughout the space. Built in 1922, the Castro Theatre is now considered a historic landmark within the city.

“I’m all about gardens connecting the architecture into the landscape,” landscape architect Timothy John Palcic tells AD PRO. He used a limited palette of chartreuse and dark hues that nod to the brick exterior and arranged benches to create intimate seating areas within the larger English-garden-inspired space. A brick-walled patio became a party-ready outdoor kitchen and dining area thanks to Douglas R. Sanicola of Outdoor Elegance. Sanicola and Monique Wood installed Caesarstone countertops fabricated by Carlito’s Way Stone to create a functional space for outdoor entertaining. Designer Mark Hermogeno paid tribute to Silver Queen Susanna Bransford Emery-Holmes in the kitchen, butler’s pantry, family room, powder room, and mudroom. “We had thought, What if she actually came back to life and asked us to remodel the space?

And Lily Stockman says founder David Alhadeff throws some of the best parties in LA. The LA region's leading classical theater company presents two annual seasons, each containing three productions in repertory.

Housed in an architecturally striking building in the heart of Downtown LA, the theater was constructed on the footprint of a 1920s movie house and still retains some of the older theater’s original walls. Beverly Hills was once home to a vibrant theater district where the city’s many celebrity residents could gather to watch themselves on the big screen (the long gone Beverly Theatre played the home movies of matinee idols on opening night). Now, the Music Hall on Wilshire Boulevard is the only theater left that regularly screens films. Operated until November by popular art house chain Laemmle, the theater is now in the hands of a dedicated group of former employees.

The Beverly Boulevard building that houses the theater has been around since 1929, but served as a candy store, a nightclub, and a live theater venue before eventually becoming a movie house in the 1950s. Opened in 1931, the historic Fox Theater in Westwood Village (now operated as the Regency Village Theatre) is most recognizable for its distinctive tower, built in an unusual blend of Art Deco and Spanish-revival styles. The UCLA-adjacent theatre can seat more than 1,300 in its spacious screening room and frequently hosts red carpet premiere events. SHULAMIT NAZARIAN616 N La Brea Ave, Los Angeles, CABased in Venice when it first opened in 2012, the gallery now presents exhibitions out of two adjacent spaces in Hollywood—with an upstairs freshly redesigned by LA studio Shamshiri.

The twin screen venue shows two double features every night—rain or shine—and is easily one of the most economical options for viewing first-run features in the LA area.

The glamorous touches continue in the ensuite bath, where Sabatella added a custom mirror-tiled tub that plays off the vintage French tile floor. Designer Rachel Scheff used the home’s spectacular ceiling, woodwork, and stained glass as the inspirations for her fanciful, flora- and fauna-filled foyer. “It was one of my favorite rooms in the house because it was the one that had the most history preserved, and I wanted to really celebrate that,” she told AD PRO. For her Foyer of Enchantment, Scheff installed a custom mural by Hattas Art Studios, a John Richard chandelier dripping with glass leaves, a silk wall covering by Aux Abris, and organic furniture created with Amorph Studio. “I wanted you to feel like you were transported to another time and place,” Scheff says.
